WHO IS THE OTHER ROE?

“The Other Roe” delves into the critical theme of protecting abortion rights by highlighting Margie Pitts Hames’ pivotal role in the landmark case of Doe v. Bolton. While Roe v. Wade often takes the spotlight, it’s essential to recognize that Doe v. Bolton concurrently decided by the Supreme Court in 1973 was a class action suit that gave medical professionals and facilities the authority to perform medically safe abortions. Through her tenacious efforts, attorney Margie Pitts Hames fought and won this case, providing a foundation for women’s abortion rights. Unfortunately, the achievement faced backlash for years and was later challenged and dismantled by Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health almost 50 years later in 2022. It is now imperative to tell the story of Doe v. Bolton, “The Other Roe”.

WHAT IS DOE V. BOLTON?

Doe v. Bolton is the lesser known companion case to Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion in 1973. They were both argued before the Supreme Court on the same day. Doe was a class action suit which overturned the restrictive abortion laws in Georgia.

WHO IS MARGIE PITTS HAMES?

Atlanta attorney Margie Pitts Hames fought and won the Georgia class action case Doe v. Bolton in 1973. Doe v. Bolton is the lesser-known companion case to Roe v. Wade. Both cases legalized abortion in the United States.

50 years later in 2022 we lost those basic abortion rights from the tilted Supreme Court decision in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. Since then, a patchwork of anti-abortion laws has made even being pregnant dangerous in the United States.

An award-winning producer, she’s received the prestigious Producers Guild Mark (p.g.a) for her producing work on the critically acclaimed and award-winning feature-length documentary MAYNARD (Netflix), directed by 2x Academy Award Nominee and 6 Primetime Emmy Winner Sam Pollard. Wendy served as Executive Producer of feature documentaries Welcome to Pine Lake (CBSN) and CARTERLAND, the official documentary of President Jimmy Carter (Gravitas Ventures). Her production company has completed the short doc, The Invitation, and now it’s in the festival circuit. She is also currently filming Counting The Ballots and Protect & Serve with Martin Luther King, III, where she is both writer and director. Wendy is developing with Living PopUps & Rock’n Robins on the limited series she wrote and co-wrote with Gigi Levangie, Ella & Marilyn. Being raised by activists in the Deep South, Donia lives with a unique thirst for peace and equality. Daughter of Margie Pitts Hames, attorney of Doe v Bolton sister case to Roe v Wade, Donia was raised amongst protests, marches, and fundraisers and brought up respecting the family, friends, and power brokers of the 70's and 80's political scene such as Jimmy Carter, Mayor Maynard Jackson, Andrew Young, Gloria Steinem and more. "Having the Roe and Doe cases overturned, we were all in shock, and now are creating a call to action to organize and unify behind a woman's right to choose. Telling the stories of how my mother and other crusading women of the time fought for a woman's autonomy and created 50 years of safe woman's reproductive health care is so important now as those rights are being systematically stripped away." Following her path devoted to teaching love, Donia has sought to heal the world rather than fight it. Or could you feed it well? She worked as a wine educator in Napa Valley at Schramsberg Vineyards and Joseph Phelps Vineyards and assisted in creating Gott's Roadside. Donia owned Carrboro Yoga Company, dedicated to building community and offering alternative ways to look at the world within the deep South through philosophical alternatives. After moving back to California, she made an underground ecstatic dance during the pandemic lockdown to unite a community within social distancing standards in vast outdoor expanses of nature. She and her partner filmed the documentary 'Dist-Dance!' which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and garnered laurels in Bangkok, Istanbul, and Japan.

Currently, she is offering healing and holding space at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and calling in the women's movement elite to create a documentary about the origins of reproductive freedom and its relevance today.

Ann Rose

Ann Rose has been a dedicated advocate for abortion rights since 1976, when she commenced her tenure at a modest Atlanta abortion clinic following her graduation from the University of Tennessee. Initially tasked with community relations, Ann co-founded the Georgia Abortion Rights Action League, where she forged a lasting partnership with Margie Pitts Hames. Over the subsequent two decades, their collaboration became emblematic of the relentless defense of abortion legality and the mitigation of anti-abortion measures impacting service provision. Transitioning to Midtown Hospital in Atlanta, specializing in later abortions, Ann sought Margie's expertise in navigating legislative and political challenges at both state and national levels. Their lobbying efforts in the Georgia Legislature were instrumental in forestalling stringent abortion restrictions. Moreover, Ann spearheaded the Georgia Women’s Agenda, an initiative fostering civil discourse in legislative processes, earning her and her colleagues the moniker "Good Ole Girls." In the wake of Margie's passing in 1994, Ann embarked on new endeavors. Collaborating with Susan Hill, she established an abortion clinic in Jackson, Mississippi, amid a tumultuous period marked by tragic violence against clinic workers. However, the landscape shifted drastically in 2022 with the pivotal Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health case overturning Roe v. Wade.

SAM POLLARD

Sam Pollard's professional accomplishments as a feature film and television video editor and documentary producer/director span almost thirty years. He served as Executive Producer on the documentary Brother Outsider, Official Selection 2003 Sundance Film Festival. His first assignment as a documentary producer came in 1989 for Henry Hampton's Blackside production Eyes On The Prize II: America at the Racial Crosswords. For one of his episodes in this series, he received an Emmy. Eight years later, he returned to Blackside as Co-Executive Producer/Producer of Hampton's last documentary series, I'll Make Me A World: Stories of African-American Artists and Community. For the series, Mr. Pollard received The George Peabody Award. Between 1990 and 2000, Mr. Pollard edited some of Spike Lee's films: Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Girl 6, Clockers, and Bamboozled. As well, Mr. Pollard and Mr. Lee co-produced a couple of documentary productions for the small and big screen: Spike Lee Presents Mike Tyson, a biographical sketch for HBO for which Mr. Pollard received an Emmy, and Four Little Girls, a feature-length documentary about the 1965 Birmingham church bombings which was nominated for an Academy Award. In 1998, Pollard received an Academy Award nomination for 4 Little Girls with Spike Lee. In 2010, Pollard (with Geeta Gandbhir and Arielle Amsalem) received an Emmy Award (Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming) for the film By the People: The Election of Barack Obama. In 2020, the International Documentary Association gave Pollard its first Career Achievement Award. MLK/FBI was named best documentary at the 2020 San Diego International Film Festival. In 2021, Film at Lincoln Center put together a Tribute to Sam Pollard, featuring several of his documentaries, calling him one of "cinema’s most dedicated chroniclers of the Black experience in America. He is the winner of nine (9) Prime-Time Emmys, eight (8) Peabody Awards, and three (3) Academy Award Nominations. LOWNDES COUNTY and The Road to Black Freedom are the 2023 Prime-Time Emmy Winners of The Best Documentary.

Emmy®-award winning producer and director Elisa Gambino brings her journalist's eye to capturing stories that matter. In 2022, she directed Wasteland, a CBS News docuseries for Paramount+ that examines wastewater's disastrous and very personal impacts on four American communities. Just a few months after it debuted, Wasteland prompted the most significant environmental justice grant in the history of New York State and won an award from the nonprofit Food and Water Watch. Most recently, Elisa traveled to the Philippines to direct “Every Day After,” an Oscar-qualified short documentary that follows Jary, a 13-year-old orphan with a disability, and Jessa, his older sister. Neal Broffman developed his eye and empathy as a boy in his father's darkroom, where he was mesmerized by the portraits of the Civil Rights Movement he saw appearing before him. A white outsider to the Movement, the elder Broffman taught his son that to photograph people with humility, a photographer must focus their ears and heart no less than their lens. Neal has since devoted his life to continuing and furthering his father's philosophy, telling visual stories that explore the common threads of connection and community worldwide. He spent a decade with CNN International, covering wars, elections, famines, and upheaval in more than 50 countries.
